I LOVE working with organizations like the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to humanize and distill complex projects in a way that engages, informs, and inspires people to take action.
“Everyone who watches the videos you developed say the same thing – you are amazing! You listened extremely well to what was needed and asked clarifying questions to ‘get it right.’ I love working with you!” said Erica Rosemond, Deputy Director of Clinical Innovation at the NIH’s National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS).
So, What's SMART IRB?
SMART IRB stands for Streamlining Multi-Site Accelerated Resources Trials IRB. It’s a national initiative backed by the NCATS and run by a wonderful team based at Harvard University. It’s designed to make multi-site research a whole lot easier.
In plain terms? It removes the red tape that slows science down.
Before SMART IRB, every time two institutions wanted to work together on a study, they had to go through a full legal review, get sign-off, and redo ALL of the same work, every single time, even if they’d already collaborated dozens of times before.
Exhausting just to read, right?
What's New with 3.0?
Version 3.0 isn’t just an update. It’s a whole new chapter. Here’s what’s exciting:
Government agencies can now join. We’re talking the Department of Defense, the VA, the Department of Energy, and NIH, who was the very first to sign on to 3.0. This opens up huge possibilities for researchers working across academic and federal lines.
It’s faster than ever. Jeremy shared a story that honestly stopped me. One institution submitted a reliance arrangement and had it back from a commercial IRB in 15 minutes. What used to take months can now happen the same day. Same. Day!
259 institutions signed on in just the first four weeks. That’s a lot of people who are ready for things to work better. And they are!
Why Jeremy Does This (And Why It Matters)
Here’s the part that really got me.
Jeremy’s grandfather Bill had colon cancer and joined a clinical trial when research was his only option. Before he passed, Bill told Jeremy something he’s never forgotten:
“This may not help me, but I know this will help others.”
That’s what this work is really about. Every institution that joins, every study that moves faster, every researcher who doesn’t have to wait months before starting. That’s for someone’s grandpa. Someone’s parent. Someone who’s counting on science to come through for them.
Who Benefits?
Here’s the part I love most. It’s genuinely good for everyone:
- Researchers and study teams aren’t starting from scratch every time. They can get going sooner and spend their energy on the actual science.
- IRB staff have templates, resources, and standard operating procedures ready to go. No reinventing the wheel.
- Institutional officials have less on their plate because the framework is already there.
- Patients and participants get access to studies faster. And that’s what it’s all about.
A rising tide raises all boats, and SMART IRB is making the tide rise!
Key Takeaways
✅ It’s completely free. To join, to maintain membership, to use as much or as little as you’d like. No fees. Zero. Zip. Nada.
✅ Version 3.0 brings federal agencies into the mix, making it easier for government-funded research to move without extra hurdles.
✅ Onboarding is quick. User guides are ready to go, and the team personally responded to every single person who gave feedback. Every. Single. One.
✅ There’s a real community here. SMART Talks, Boot Camps, Ambassadors across the country. These are real people who will actually sit with you and help.
✅ It doesn’t matter how big or small you are. If your institution doesn’t even have its own IRB, SMART IRB is a great way to get involved in the research world.
